Talk by Mr Jeremy Liew

For those who missed out on the Prefect's camp, this post is for you. For those who did attend it, just read through it to refresh your memory (:

This is just going to be a summary of what MrLiew talked about. I wish for you to read it.

1. Mr Liew focused on us Prefects being an opportunity for us to learn. To be able to develop leadership skills, management skills, developing others as well as ourselves in accordance to the school values - faith service community.

For such learning to take place, we must always seek to understand the purpose and meaning of our actions. What we are called to do (duties, being a role model, being proactive etc) always has a learning point for all of us. Mr liew even quoted - "then you will be able to take any kind of hardship."

2. Going further, he talks about being able to look at the bigger picture. To understand the existance of an organization such as the Prefectorial Board. Are we a disciplinary body? Or are we a group of people hoping to help build a school culture where faith, service and community can truly be found? That is something he asked you guys to think about, and i feel that it's very important that you establish an understanding of the bigger picture we are to look at.

This is important, as our actions as an organization must be in line with our purpose. He used the example of the school organizing the LAMDA examinations - to give us the opportunity to be effective communicators - which is in the profile of the ideal SJI boy. Same for us, we have to always look at the possible result of things. If it isn't what we want to achieve, don't do it. We must always remained focused on our purpose.

3. He then went on to talk about leadership, and cited the example of a leadership seminar by Kouzes and Posner when they asked the participants to write down the qualities they find most important in leadership. It turned out that honesty, and integrity were the most popular ones. Why? Because people must be able to place their trust in their leaders. Most of the time we don't have the experience or the time to analyse everything about a person before you follow him, so honesty is what makes you trustworthy. Of course, it doesn't stop there, whether people respect your leadership later on is a whole different thing.

4. Ask yourself what you want to see most in your leader, and try to develop that yourself. Certainly, we have to be able to discern what's truely desirable of a leader, not just from our point of view, but from others as well.

5. Last but not least, Humility. Live by the reality of things, your weaknesses and strengths, accept them. Only then will you be able to identify and improve yourself. Learn from mistakes, always have a balance of work and play, humour and seriousness.

I will be posting about Kenny Wong's talk in a couple of days, check the blog regularly please (:

Regarding Camp

Seems like there're still many questions regarding the camp.

About reporting attire, for the first day report in PE attire, as it would mostly involve games. For the second day, REPORT IN PE but also bring along your school uniform. (we will tell you more about it on the first day as we aren't sure if all the sec 2 going onto sec 3 have already gotten their long pants).

Regarding a question about being allowed to shower, there will be time allocated for showering on the first day. We will see how many of you will want the shower rooms to be open on the second day after camp as it ends earlier.

If there are still any questions please post them on the tagboard or contact me.

Prefect's Camp

Okay Prefects, here's the details for reporting time

Report on 21st Dec (Monday) for registration at 7.30am with your money to be paid upon registration. The groupings will be put up infront of the PE department so just look for your names and go to the respective tables to register. Remember to bring $35 dollars. Once again if you're asking why it's so expensive, it's because that includes the cost of the shirt ($10) as well.

Once again defaulters who don't turn up will have to pay the full sum of the camp because we have already catered for you.

The shirt will be given to you on the second day only.

This is to address the questions posted on the tagboard:

The reason fo the 5 meals is because we catered dinner for you guys on the first day as it ends at 8.00pm (latest 8.30). On the second day however it ends earlier, at 7.00pm (latest 7.30), so we did not cater dinner for that day.

Please note that dinner isn't the last activity for the first day.

To the question about this camp being a stayover camp, i think it is clear by now that it is NOT a stayover camp, reason being that the classrooms are unavailable during this period of time due to renovation works or something.

Please spread this message to your fellow prefects who are attending the camp. If there are any further queries please don't hesitate to contact me.

(If you're wondering why i don't leave my email or contact number here, it's because i'll recieve spam and other nonsense)

Hope to see you guys at camp, it will be a little different, but still i cannot stress the importance of this camp for the year 2010 ahead of us.

Regarding Camp

Hey Prefects, hope you guys are "enjoying" your holidays as much as I am, may it be through overseas trips, outings with friends or just a day relaxing at home, at least we know that there's no homework due TOMORROW.

Getting to the point, please check the blog regularly for the next few days for updates on the camp (including finalized camp details ie. packing list, briefly what the camp is going to be about etc).

For those who CANNOT make it for the camp (21st, 22nd DEC) and DID NOT INDICATE EARLIER ON, INFORM US ASAP (Latst Wednesday) . If not, you will have to pay for the camp fees as well. For those who aren't coming, you will only have to pay for the PB Shirt.

For those who aren't sure about them informing us about their attendance, please send an email to my email account.

Thank you guys, stay healthy and dont neglect your homework :D
